Tastes like the Sea

Hey there everybody --

Just wanted to write and share a few bits about something you may or may not be putting into your face in the near future, if ever.

I had some fantastic sushi tonight, some of the best I've ever had. I'm no newbie to sushi, but I decided to stretch my bounds a bit further than normal tonight, way past the California rolls that some people consider their limits. Unfortunately, or perhaps more fortunately, pufferfish was not on the menu, so I opted for the sea urchin. It was pretty tasty, I'll admit, once you get past the point of it tasting like the sea. I would order it again, as something very different from the rest of my meal.

Upon doing a bit more research here tonight, I've found out some interesting things about the way that these algae munching spiny devils are served. First off, it is considered urchin roe, though it's actually the organs that produce the roe that you are consuming on a bed of rice (do with that what you will). Sea otters chow down on urchins as well, I'm sure resting a delicious feast on their chests as they swim on their backs in your local ocean. Urchin is also considered an aphrodisiac, although the texture and appearance leads me to believe that perhaps that could be balanced out of consideration. With a little sake, though, anything could be possible.

Just a few things to think about the next time you go and order "uni" at your local sushi place. I would encourage everybody to give it a try, if only to see what it's all about.

Go now, and enjoy good food!
